Normally, Sims can spend all their time outside and as long as they aren't officially "sunbathing", then they don't get any tan or burn at all. With this mod, simply being outside in the sunlight is enough to get a tan or risk getting a burn.

How does it work?

Any time your Sim steps outside, if it is sunny then they will start to slowly get a tan. The same moodlets as normal will alert you when they are in range to get a tan or in danger of getting a burn, so get an eye out for that. The next time your Sim enters a building or when the sun sets, the tanning stops and, if they are in range for a tan or burn, the tan lines are set to whatever clothes they are wearing at that time.

Sims will get a tan after a few hours outside and it will develop into a burn from there. Be careful! Sunburns are more Uncomfortable and last longer with this mod installed. If you want to be safe, sunblock is now a functional object. It can be applied from your Sim's inventory or when placed in the world, and it will greatly slow down how fast your Sim tans/burns while it is active. You can still buy sunblock in Build Mode like normal, and it is also available at the beach shop, ranger station, jungle vendors, university kiosks, and vacation supplies store.

Tanning only affects Teen-Elder Sims, and will not affect NPCs, so you don't have to worry about a town full of lobsters. Vampires do not tan, and Forgotten Hollow is exempt from all tanning effects. Similarly, aliens do not tan, and Sixam is exempt as well.

If you have Seasons installed, weather is taken into account. Sims will tan slower when there is cloud cover or during winter, and there is no tanning at all while it is raining.

For convenience, there is no tanning and no sunburns while travelling in Batuu.

Requirements and Compatibility

This mod requires the Island Living expansion pack.

This mod contains a few overrides and will conflict with any other mods that edit the following:

Sunburnt moodlet Applied Sunblock moodlet Ray's Anti-Ray Ultimate Sunblock object

Settings File

There is a settings file for this mod that generates in the folder "Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\saves\Kuttoe" after you first play with the mod installed. To change your settings, open the "[Kuttoe] BasicBurns_Settings.cfg" file with notepad or any text editor and change the number to your desired values. The number must be positive and can use decimal points.
"tan_rate"  controls how quickly Sims tan. At the default value of 1, Sims will tan in about 2 hours and burn in about 4. Higher numbers will make it faster, with 2 being twice as fast. Numbers between 0 and 1 will make it slower, with 0.5 being half as fast.

I'm looking forward to the next update so I can get this back in my game. xD

How long does the tan last?

Hello, Kuttoe.

I'm Samuel from China, I translated your mod (BasicBurns) into Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, you can find it here: http://www.simfileshare.net/download/4489116/

Meanwhile I really like this mod, I have more than 10000 followers on Chinese social media. I will recommend you to them. Thanks again for your amazing work.

Thank you for this! I will get it included in the mod when I upload all the patch repairs.

Hello. Here's Russian translation by Bonconmeo from Origamika group https://drive.google.com/file/d/12DTVIS94ooMd3uiPsUwUoQK2CcmGPNSm/view

I'm sorry, Kuttoe, but could you please change the credits for Russian translation? It's not me, who translated it, but Bonconmeo, another girl from our team.

Will do, sorry for not seeing that before.

file has July 31, 2023 instead of today's date.

This update still only gives 4 hours of sunburn protection.

I've reuploaded the zip file, try downloading again and see if you get the newest version.

It's the right one now. Thank you

Hello :)  Today's date of the mod files after the update is August 1, 2023, is this not a mistake? Shouldn't it be 09/01/2024?

I've reuploaded the zip file, try downloading again and see if you get the newest version.

Thank You very much !

Please make the sunblock retail compatible?

As a warning, the Sunblock Overlay addon can hide some of your skin details in live mode. This was driving me up the wall until I figured it out. Otherwise, works well.

Love this mod. Will you ever include burns from fires within this mod?

Not convenient or realistic on Batuu.  Every time I go to Batuu Cast Members are burned to a crisp from the College Program.  Tourists are burned to a crisp.  Tourists tanning themselves on a bench burning themselves to a crisp.  It is a beautiful 73 degrees today on Batuu.  Time to get a real-life tan on Batuu at Hollywood Studios.

To be extremely technical Black Spire Outpost is almost identical to Tatooine conditions, unlike Tatooine which has 2 suns, there are 3 suns on Batuu.  Basic Burns needs to be implemented on Batuu.  I got burned on Opening Day of Galactic's Edge just waiting in line for the Millenium Falcon.

When traveling to Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland or Disney's Hollywood Studios, Suntan Lotion is a MUST!  You will be burned to a crisp and look like a tourist not used to the California or Florida sun and be a lobster.

This cousin of Walt and Roy O, has no clue why you did not implement Batuu, which is a must.  If you read every media source the most important thing to have when going to Galaxy's Edge, we always state sunscreen as the first thing to have when visiting.

Any chance of adding traits like "easily burnt" or "sun resistant" or whatever to change how long sims need to be in the sun or whether they need sunscreen or not?

I make mods that add functionality to decor objects, including a much more basic sunblock mod. They're not compatible and that's totally fine because mine doesn't really do much anyway, just puts the EA sunblock functionality on the object.

But I have had a request to make my functional beach basket mod work with your sunblock as well as with my own. I wouldn't use any of your tuning, just give it your interaction and let it work if your mod is installed, but I still didn't want to do it without reaching out and asking if that was alright first.

Would it be okay if I add that interaction and provide a link to this page?

Sure, adding references to my mod is perfectly fine by me. Thanks! Contact me by Discord if you need more information, code snippets, or other kinds of collaboration.
